A review of the oedipus the king

Oedipus then speaks about the Oracle that states that he would kill his father and bed his mother, saying that he demands to see the person who lived through and saw the murder of Laius. At once, Oedipus sets about to solve the murder. As a reader who has read many different stories this has to be one of the best. As a story that was written at B. I guess is was a pretty good way to become a king back then, to come along and help lift a curse on a city, and Oedipus earns his title as the just savior of the land. Oedipus gouges out his own eyes and goes into exile. According to Jocasta, the prophecy did not come true because the baby died, abandoned, and Laius himself was killed by a band of robbers at a crossroads. Another worry haunts Oedipus. As Oedipus is looking for answers the Chorus had told him to talk to Tiresias, as he is the blind prophet. I find it fascinating how crucial a role is played by oracles throughout the three plays—and what that says about human nature. Another part of the Greek drama that is enjoyable is the chorus. As a young man, he learned from an oracle that he was fated to kill his father and marry his mother.

The man who saw Laius get murdered had come to the king explaining what he had seen and that Oedipus was the one to kill Laius. Again, Jocasta advises him not to worry about prophecies.

oedipus rex short version

Confident that the worst he can hear is a tale of his lowly birth, Oedipus eagerly awaits the shepherd. The power of the story is watching the realization that he was the problem all along, that his own destruction were written into him from birth, and he despite all his best intentions and fate-defying counter-maneuvers, he could never escape himself, never outrun the reality of who he actually was.

Review In my own opinion this was an amazing story with plot twist all over the place.

Confident that the worst he can hear is a tale of his lowly birth, Oedipus eagerly awaits the shepherd. The man who saw Laius get murdered had come to the king explaining what he had seen and that Oedipus was the one to kill Laius. Throughout this mythic story of patricide and incest, Sophocles emphasizes the irony of a man determined to track down, expose, and punish an assassin, who turns out to be himself. Oedipus becomes distressed by Jocasta's remarks because just before he came to Thebes he killed a man who resembled Laius at a crossroads. As a story that was written at B. Oedipus has already sent his brother-in-law, Creon, to the oracle to learn what to do. Still, Oedipus worries about fulfilling the prophecy with his mother, Merope, a concern Jocasta dismisses. Review In my own opinion this was an amazing story with plot twist all over the place. When her brother Polyneices is killed and Creon orders that the prince not be buried, Antigone refuses to accept the decree. The townspeople agree to call in their king, Theseus, and let him decide. Oedipus, on the other hand, responds more profoundly by poking his own eyes out, refusing to look again upon this world but remaining as a witness to his own abomination. The messenger soon states that his parents that live in another village are not in fact his real parents, but his adoptive parents.

When a peasant who saw everything is called to testify, his story strikes Oedipus as disturbingly familiar. Oedipus mocks and threatens the oracle until the fortune-teller gets fed up and tells the king that it was he, Oedipus, who killed his predecessor.
